How to Choose the Perfect Rug for Your Space

Selecting the perfect rug for your space can really enhance your home’s decor, bringing warmth, style and coherence to your interiors. Whether you're looking to define an area, add a splash of colour or simply create comfort underfoot, the right rug can make all the difference.

Here’s our guide to help you choose the ideal rug for your space…

Measuring Your Space

Define The Area Rug

Before buying a rug, determine the space you want it to cover. Are you placing it in a living room, bedroom, dining area, or hallway? The function of the room will guide the size and style of the rug you need.

Rug Sizes By Room

Living Room: If you are choosing a rug for the centre of the room - ensure that all the front legs of your furniture sit on the rug to unify the seating area.

Dining Room: A good rule of thumb is to measure your dining table and add 50cm all around. This allows chairs to stay on the rug when pulled out.

Bedroom: Place a large rug under a double bed, extending at least 50cm on either side. Alternatively, runners can add interest on either side of a double bed. For a child's bedroom, a feature rug can take centre stage.

Room Size Considerations

A good tip is to use masking tape to outline the rug’s dimensions on the floor before purchasing to visualise how it will fit the space. Move your furniture around it and live with the outline for a day or two to check it’s right.

Choosing A Different Rug Style

Modern Rugs

Modern rugs typically have bold patterns, geometric shapes and vibrant colours. They are perfect for contemporary or minimalist spaces, adding a dynamic element to the room. Our Candy Collection is inspired by confectionary classics and they bring a vibrant touch of delicious colour and pattern to the floor.

Transitional Rugs

Transitional rugs blend traditional and modern elements, featuring classic patterns with contemporary colour schemes. They are versatile and can complement various decor styles.

Natural Fibre Rugs

Made from materials like wool, jute, sisal, hemp or linen, these rugs bring an organic, earthy feel to a space. They are durable and work well in high-traffic areas or casual settings. Our Grace and Savannah rugs bring a natural sophistication to any interior scheme.

Textured Pile Rugs

Textured pile rugs are known for their deep pile and plush texture, providing a cozy and luxurious feel. They are ideal for bedrooms or sitting room areas where luxury and comfort underfoot are priorities. Browse our Elements collection.

Shaped Rugs

Consider the impact of a feature rug that’s not a typical rectangular or square shape - an organic rose or circular shape can really elevate a space. Our Oro Rug is the perfect example of a show stopping shape.

Coordinating with Existing Decor

Colour Coordination

Match or Complement: Choose a rug that matches or complements the hero colours in your room. This creates a harmonious look. For example, if your room has neutral tones, a rug with a subtle pattern or a solid colour in a similar palette will blend seamlessly.

Contrasting Colours: If you want the rug to be a focal point, select a colour that contrasts with your existing decor. This can add a visual pop of interest and drama to the space.

Pattern Play

Mixing Patterns: When mixing patterns, ensure one pattern is dominant while others are more subdued. For example, if your furniture features bold patterns, opt for a rug with a more subtle design.

Pattern Scale: Consider the scale of patterns. Large patterns can make a space feel larger, while smaller patterns can add intricacy without overwhelming the room.

Texture and Material

Complementary Textures: Consider mixing different textures to add depth to your decor. If your furniture is sleek and smooth, a textured rug can provide a pleasing contrast.

Material Consideration: Choose materials based on the room’s function. For high-traffic areas, durable materials like wool or natural fibres like jute or our sustainable PET are ideal. For low-traffic areas, silk adds a touch of luxury.

Bring Your Style To Life

Ensure that the rug’s aesthetic aligns with the overall theme of your decor. Create a moodboard featuring your existing colours or interior pieces and use this as a base to select your rug around. Even better, why not go bespoke and use your mood board as the inspiration to create a truly unique and bespoke rug for your room.

Choosing the perfect rug for your space involves careful consideration of size, style, colour, and texture. By measuring accurately, understanding different rug styles, and coordinating with your existing decor, you can select a rug that not only enhances the beauty of your space but also provides comfort and functionality.

Designed in house, we draws on the knowledge and expertise of our skilled artisans, whose centuries-old techniques ensure that each design is entirely one of a kind, crafted by hand to last a lifetime.

The Bespoke Design Process

We ensure a perfect shade match to ensure the chosen colours fit perfectly with your scheme, we help to determine the shape and size that best suits the space and work with you to select from an array of premium fibres, textures and techniques.

Our design team will draw artwork of your rug, allowing you to envisage how it will look within the space, we will then work with you to choose an area to sample and our skilled artisans will knot, weave or loop a bespoke sample so that you & your client can feel the quality and texture of the final piece.

Sampling can take up to 4 to 6 weeks, our samples are one-of-a-kind and they are made by hand using the same precision and skill as the final rug.

Artwork and samples are presented to you for sign off and it is then that the production of your bespoke rug or carpet can begin.

The production of your piece can take anything from 8 weeks to 14 weeks, however we usually deliver at around week 12. Each rug is entirely hand made from the dying of the yarn, the weaving, knotting or tufting through to the final finishing, carving or shearing.

We endeavour to use sustainable materials and ensure that our rugs are made from completely natural fibres, including wool, bamboo, jute, cotton, linen and hemp.
