Buying a Rug in 2021

It’s just a rug, isn’t it? Well, not exactly. Choosing the right rug for your space is like choosing the right art. Oftentimes a rug is an investment that sets the tone for the entire space (and cannot be changed with the season). And while questions like what material should I choose? and how small is too small? are common, there may be other things to consider in the new year.

BACK TO BASICS...

Buying too small. Nothing makes a room look more awkward than a rug that’s too small.  Think about scale, size and practicality. For example, in the dining room, where will chairs be when pulled out? How much traffic will the rug endure? Think about the front legs of living room furniture always included in the rug’s space, as to keep in scale. Think of the rug as the collector of the room’s furniture.

CONSDIER SUSTAINABILITY

It’s 2021 people, time to start being part of the solution. When we choose to buy recycled we can give materials a new life. Not only are we supporting the reuse of, otherwise, unwanted materials, we are also saving energy and reducing the demand for new materials.

The Shore Collection by Holmes Bespoke has cleverly used yarn spun from disused plastic bottles to produce five unique hand-knotted designs inspired by India’s beaches. So soft to the touch, the PET yarn used is easy to clean, resistant to stains and UV discolouration and will essentially last you a lifetime - Vivienne Westwood did sayBuy less, choose well, and make it last.”

SUPPORTING LOCAL DESIGNERS

Now when all is said and done, hiring an expert to do the job always has its perks. Beyond their size, small businesses and local designers are defined by their attention to detail and eagerness to please. With a bespoke service, whether furniture, cabinets or rugs, having something that perfectly fits is important. And not only into the space, something that fits your lifestyle and is a reflection of who you are.
