Rugs in the Bedroom

Start your day on the right foot

I’ve had a small obsession lately with how rugs essentially make a room. Of all the spaces in your home, a rug in the bedroom makes the most sense. It is your quiet and peaceful retreat from the day. Yes… it’s important to consider size and placement (which we touched on in a previous blog post), but it’s also important to think about why a rug should be there in the first place.

Anchor

Like in all rooms of the home, rugs can anchor furniture that would, otherwise, be ‘floating’ in the space. The rug should be big enough to frame the bed and bedside tables. We’ve worked with numerous interior designers, and a range of residential and commercial projects, and can confirm bigger is better in the bedroom. A wall-to-wall rug makes the space appear larger, quieter and cosier. Do remember that the centre of the rug will be covered by the bed, so lean toward a rug with a patterned border.

Comfort & Warmth

Understanding rug pile (or talking to our specialists…) will really help you achieve the look you’re after. Whether it’s creating a lush, intimate space with a thick pile or adding texture and colour with a short pile on an already carpeted floor, getting specific with the rug properties is key. As the rug won’t have to endure coffee spills or muddy boots you can really choose fibres based on their aesthetic quality rather than their stain resistance or ability to ware high traffic.

Holmes Bespoke has created custom rugs for a great deal of different hotel projects and these rugs have been principal in creating a homeyness and cosiness that would otherwise be absent.

As a bedhead

Rugs don’t have to just exist on the floor, as we’ve touched on previously, rugs are perfect for behind the bed. Go bold with print, colour and texture as all will be on display. Just be wary of how big you go...talk to our specialists about rug weights and how best to hang your new work of art.

Practicality

Now let’s get a little practical, although we can’t speak highly enough of how cosy and stylish rugs can be in your space, there are also practical reasons why you should consider a rug in the bedroom. Rugs aid in the reduction of noise and thus are a perfect, and stylish, way to soundproof your cosy retreat. Additionally, rugs are great at keeping warmth in the bedroom and act as an insulator (especially on hardwood floors).
